About Boca
When I first visited Boca de Tomatlán in 2005, I was struck by how peaceful it was. Tranquilo is the Spanish word best used to describe it. Boca es muy tranquilo. From the moment I arrived in Boca I knew I was in “real” Mexico. Boca is only 12 miles from Puerto Vallarta but light years away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts and bars and traffic of one of Mexico’s top tourist destinations. To visualize this special place, picture a beautiful ocean cove on the Bay of Banderas created by the Río Horcones, which tumbles down through the steep jungle-covered hills and empties into the bay bringing cool, clear water to mix with the warm ocean. It is a rare place where you can listen to a rushing river and ocean waves. And, you can witness the changing shape of the beach as the river and tides sculpt a new look every day. Boca is a vibrant fishing village. Here you will find only two streets, both filled with small stores, a great dive shop, an internet café, and homes. All the locals are friendly and helpful. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican experience, Boca is the place. A typical day in Boca might be like this: Go to the beach early and buy some fresh fish from the fishermen returning from their sunrise fishing, or hire your own boat to fish for your own dinner. Watch the water taxis filling with locals going to work and tourists heading for outings. Take a hike down the coast to secluded beaches and other villages; or upriver to the beautiful waterfalls. Swim or kayak in the ocean and sunbathe on the beach. Or, you can just spend the day sitting on your balcony watching Mexican life unfold in front of you. Now, don’t be misled. Boca is a lively Mexican village, and you will often hear roosters crowing, dogs barking, donkeys braying, and music playing. Ask yourself, would you rather be here listening to that or back home hearing phones or traffic or your furnace kick in?
